| COUGHLAN Feb 2003 |
I am looking for the descendants of Jerry (Jeremiah) Coughlan and Mary Anne Rule
who are listed in the 1880 Clear Creek census at Silver Plume together with their
children Mary Jane (b 1860 in England), William John (b 1863, England), James (b
1867, PA), Hannah (b 1869 CT), Elisabeth (b 1875 CT) and Gerod (b 1878 CT). Jeremiah was born in Kill, Waterford, Ireland and Mary Anne was born in Cleator, Cumberland, England. They had 3 children in Cleator before going to the US. Matilda is not recorded in Silver Plume so she must have died before 1880. I am wishing to trace the descendants to expand my family tree and of course to make contacts with relatives. Jeremiah was the second son of William Coughlan. I have traced family to South Africa but the older siblings (3 brothers and 1 sister) are "missing". Having found Jeremiah I want to trace his descendants and tell them of their origins, especially the families of Mary Jane and William John as they were both born in the town where the remaining Coughlans stayed (me included). Contact: Barry Coughlan, b.coughlan@ntlworld.com, the youngest son of William who is the youngest son of Jeremiah who is the youngest son of James who is the youngest brother of JEREMIAH from Silver Plume. Added August 2003....

to Denver. Through research I have found that my ancestors siblings came to Silver
Plume, Clear Creek County to be silver miners during the 1870's. They were Jerry
Coughlan and his brother William. Their surnames were spelt differently with "LAN" or
"LIN" at the end. However I strongly believe they are brothers, both born in Ireland
but married in England and then left to go to the US. I am in England and know a lot
about the "original" Irish roots as I am related to them. |

Axel Benard NELSON and his wife, Agnes Marguerite (Pearson) NELSON, from
Stockholm, Sweden, lived in Gilpin County for many years, while he worked
the mines in Central City, Idaho Springs, etc. Their son, Arnold Gunnar
Nelson, lived in Blackhawk from the time he was approximately 10 until he
was 21; about 1936-1948. On May 21, 1948 Arnold married Patricia Ann
"Decker" in Idaho Springs. Axel and Agnes had a daughter, Hilda Marilyn
NELSON, born in Rollingsville, January 18, 1936. Other siblings that
attended school in Blackhawk include: Clara Ruby NELSON, Axel Grant NELSON,

| NELSON Dec 2001 |
Looking for information in regards to Carl (possibly Charles) Nelson married
to Selma Nelson. I am not sure of the accuracy of this information, but in
the family bible, says that Carl Gustaf Nelson was born May 3, 1872 in
Saginaw MI. He and his wife married May 3rd 1897 in Denver, CO. Their son
Erwin Clarence Nelson was born May 24th, 1898 in Idaho Springs CO and their
daughter was born July 5th 1901 in Central City CO. They moved from CO at
some point and ended up in Cochise County, AZ in a town called Bisbee. Any
information would be helpful and appreciated. Contact: Cary Rutherford, caryrjr@pacbell.net. |
| NICHOLS Mar 2004 |
Looking for information about husband's grandfather, Roscoe Nichols (or Nicholls)
who came from Central City, Colorado and had a brother, (name unknown). I have an
old picture of them both as young children in Central City. I would suspect that
the dates were from the 1870's-1880's. There appears to be 2 names, Pearl Olive and William, listed at a
cemetery there (began with a "B"). Roscoe was a Salvation Army member who moved
to California and married my husband's grandmother, Clara Darling. Contact: Rosemarie C. Schmidt, rschm466@earthlink.net. |
| NICHOLS Mar 2004 |
I am researching my great grandmother and her husband, Sarah Anne Bevins Nichols and
Thomas S. Nichols, who lived in Clear Creek County in 1880 in District 37 with their
children Ella, Alice and Florence. Thomas S. was also noted on this census (a second
time) as a miner in Central City, Gilpin County. He also had a connection with a
transportation route to Omaha. Sarah Nichols was a concert pianist trained in England
(where they both had been born) and after his death has been rumored to have played in
some of the local establishments to support the children after his death. After Thomas' death, she remarried another man, alledgedly named Copson, and moved to Omaha. However, with the 1890 census burned, she shows up in 1900 in Starke County, IN with 4 additional children, all of whom use the name Nichols, and who are all born in Omaha. | OBRIEN Aug 2003 |
Amanda Hinton born 1844, Salt Pond, Saline County, Missouri - married (1) in
1859 to John Obrion/Obrien/Obrian/Obryan (yes I found all those spellings),
they had the following children: Anna E., Margaret , Ida Mary , Thomas J., and
John. She married (2) in 1879 to Peter Lamear who brought at least 2 children
to this marriage. I found 2 others that MAY be THEIR children: William and R. E.
(probably Emmit). Margaret moved her family to Colorado before 1885 (I cannot find
Peter listed so it is possible he died while serving in the Civil War) with her
large family. I believe she came first to Clear Creek County, Colorado then moved
to Lake City, Hinsdale County and Pueblo, Pueblo County, CO. She moved to Glendale
CA with her son William Lamear - after she was 85 years old and she died at age 90.
Ida Mary Obrien (and all the other spellings) came to Colorado with her mother when she was about 18 years old. There she married John Carrothers (Caruthers, Coruthers) and had at least 2 children. I do not know when John died, but she moved to Lake City and married Emil Walter Soderholm (married in Wyoming - a train trip), they had no children. She lived her life in Lake City and Pueblo. She died in Gunnison, Co. There were several Obrion/Obrien 'boys' who may have stayed in Clear Creek - I am still researching information on them. If these names sound familiar to you, I would appreciate hearing from you and sharing information. My connection with these families is through Amanda Hinton/Obrion/Lamear who was the sister to my great grandfather, George Hinton. Contact: Margie Hinton, marhinton@earthlink.net. |

Searching for any information on George E. O'Connor, marriage, wife's name,
child, anything. George E. O'Connor is my ggfather who was in Georgetown
about 1877-78. Went on to Leadville to become the first marshall in 1878.
Murdered April 25, 1878 by a deputy. Rocky Mt. News article follows.
The killing of George O'Connor was a brutal affair and no doubt premeditated, If the murderer had been caught within two days his fate in Leadville would have been a short one. O'Connor was formerly in the livery business at Georgetown. He was quite popular in this community. He died the next day after being shot, and was buried the second day, services held in the Catholic Church, Rev, Father Robinson conducting them. Rocky Mt. The OSTRANDER families came to Colorado from NY, IL and WI after 1862 and

the cousins (Daniel, Joseph, etc.). The daughter of D. N. Ostrander, Belle

| POPE Jan 2000 |
I am looking for ANY information about Martin Pope and his wife, Ellen
Bryant Pope who had two children in Silver Plume: my grandmother, Mary, and
her brother, Nicholas. They were the only full siblings, but Ellen
had 9 other children by Martin's brother, her first husband. He was killed
in a mining accident somewhere in the area. Since my grandmother was born
in 1886, my guess in that the accident would have occured in '84 or so.
These Cornish miners worked fast (Martin had to rush to Colorado from South
Africa and was no doubt in a hurry). The only other "kids" names I know
are the oldest daughter, Nell (born in Cornwall), Etta, and William. Those
all ended up in Butte and ultimately Seattle. All I have is a piece of oral
tradition that I am trying to make sense of some way or other. My
grandmother's name was Mary Pope and, by family tradition, was from or born
in Silver Plume. She is one of the youngest two children of her mother, who
MAY also be Mary Pope. Mother Mary was married to _____Pope (Mr. #1) in
Corwall in the late 1860's. She had her oldest child, Nellie (who
practically raised me), in 1869. Mother and child were listed in the 1870
Cornwall Census. Mother is listed as "married" but no husband is listed. I
think he was overseas mining somewhere. At Some point, Pope #1 send for his
young family and they ended up in Silver Plume via Negaunee, Michigan
(another Cornish mining "colony.") Ultimately Mary ended up with 9 kids
from Mr. Pope #1. At some point, he was either killed in a Colorado mine
or maybe just died. This had to be before my grandmother, Mary, was born,
which was either in 1886 or 1889, depending on if I believe my dad or my
aunt. When #1 died, his brother, Pope #2, was contacted in South Africa
and he came to Silver Plume or the environs to care for his brother's
family. It is unclear whether Mary and #2 legally married, but they did
have two more kids, my grandmother Mary and her brother Nick. |

| PRISK Jan 2000 |
I am looking for information about a Prisk who lived in Central City in 1908.
There was an article in the February 20, 1998, Register Call about an
Elizabeth F. Prisk vs. The Sleepy hollow Gold Mining Company. This was for
$5,000 for the loss of her son, Willie Prisk who lost his life in the
Americus Sleepy hollow flood of August 1895. I went to the Register Call and
looked up the incident. It told about the flood and also said the almost
lifeless body of Henry Prisk was found, who was above the water line, but
suffering from fouls air and gas. He was hauled to the surface and was soon
revived and taken to his residence on the corner of Packard and Gregory
streets. It goes on to say his son, a mere lad, became exhausted and fell back
into the water. Up until that time I thought I was the only Prisk ever in
Colorado. If you have any information I would appreciate hearing it. Contact: Carol Moncrief-Prisk, MOUNTAINGRAMA@aol.com, PO BOX 2894, Evergreen, CO 80437-2894. Phone 303-670-1889. |
| RARICK Nov 1997 |
In 1877 George W RARICK left home, (Waterloo Iowa) and went to South Dakota
and then to Georgetown, Colorado. The last his parents heard from him was
in November of 1877 when he would have been about 18 years of age. In 1915
his sister had him declared legally dead so she could settle the parents
estate. This sister claimed she had heard indirectly that he was killed in
a mining accident in 1877 in Georgetown. It is believed that her father had
handbills posted about 1880 requesting information on his son. However,
George was named in the will of his mother in 1886 so apparently his mother
believed he was still alive. Looking for any information that may be
extant on mining accidents and deaths during this time period or on the
whereabouts of George W RARICK if he survived. Contact: |

name of Snyder. All the information on the family came from my Great Aunt.
My GG Aunt Anna Peterson married a Samuel Snyder who's family "owned a home

description came from my G-Aunt). The house was reported to have been bought
by a family from Texas and refurbished to a very nice house. The family owned a gold mine in Blackhawk that was closed and filled in so the county could build a school near it. Sam also "had a brother named Elias who Shoed all the mules that worked in the mines in the area." The family names
that I know are Samuel T. Snyder, born 21 Mar 1881, died 6 Oct 1959, and
Sam's brothers Adolph and Elias. I am interested in learning more about

| THOMAS July 1997 Updated August 1998 |
Mary Jane Gregory immigrated into the US from Cornwall, Eng. in 1862, age 6
or 7, with or without her parents, James and Rebecca (Broad) Gregory. Mary
Jane married George Thomas in Randolph Township, Morris County, NJ, in 1871.
They moved to CA by January, 1880, when son Sam was born, then moved to
Idaho Springs, CO by 1885. George was a miner (parents John & Johanna-we
believe Cornwall). George died 1892 in Idaho Springs (we have burial
record). Mary Jane married a Ben Forrest in 1893. She passed away in Idaho
Springs in 1903, Ben having died in 1902 (have burial records). Sam Thomas
registered for the WWI in Clear Creek County. We have had no luck
finding any knowledge of the Gregorys here - could not find them in Morris
County 1870 census. Found our George Thomas living with a Samuel Penrose
on the same 1870 census
which also listed a Rebecca Penrose - (fits agewise with our Rebecca Broad
Gregory, though possibly James died and she married Samuel Penrose). Have
not been able to find a marriage record though. There is a Samuel Penrose
buried in our Thomas plot in Idaho Springs and we assume he is the same one.
We have tried and not been able to trace George's or Samuel Penrose's past in
Cornwall, if indeed they emigrated from there. They were both born in
England, George circa 1844 and Sam circa 1835. Family information has been
very limited. My cousin was told there are no surviving death records for
1890's Idaho Springs. Great-grandparents were Jane Rebecca Thomas and
Richard Julian Seccombe. We have information for them since they married in
1890 in Idaho Springs. Two daughters, Emily and Grace Seccombe, (never
married) lived there until about 1990, however could or would not give us
family information. Looking for any information on these lines.

| VIVIAN Aug 2003 |
Looking for historical information on the BUNNEY and VIVIAN families in both Clear
Creek and Gilpin Counties. Specifically, I'm looking for Robert Bunney who married
Mary/Margaret Tresider Vivian around 1867-68. Robert Bunney had a mining claim on the
Gregory Lode as early as 1864. Two Vivian brothers, Thomas and John(?) had a mine in
Empire, Clear Creek County and are buried in Central City. Both grave markers have been
desecrated. Robert Bunney and Mary/Margaret are buried at Crown Hill cemetery. He died
in 1910 and she passed away in 1922. The reason I'm looking for this information is for a book to be written about John F. and John C. Vivian. Robert Bunney was John F. Vivian's stepfather. John C. Vivian, his son, born in 1887 in Jefferson County went on to become Colorado's 30th Governor 1943-47. Any help on where to search for records would be greatly appreciated. Jamaica in the 1870's). I would like to find information about or
